Igreja de Santa Maria da Devesa

This is the parish church. Its construction began in the beginning of 1789, in a place where once was a little shrine, founded in 1311 by Lourenço Pires and his wife. The church was finished around 1873. It is a very large temple, maybe the biggest in Alto Alentejo.

The church of Santa Maria da Devesa stays at the west corner of Praça D. Pedro V. The building is facing south, it has a staircase and a forecourt with an iron fence and granite pilasters at south surrounding the monument.

This church is composed by a group of seven areas: nave, chapel, transept, two bell towers and two sacristies.

The nave is rectangular and divided in four areas, separated by painted pilasters. The ceiling is a barrel vault, also divided by transverse arches. In the first area by the main entrance, is the choir, $nbsp;the ceiling of the sub-chorus is a groin vault.

The chapel is rectangular, the ceiling is a barrel vault on the top of cornice extending the nave and the transept. In the east and west walls there are doors to the sacristies. In the north wall raises the altar. There is a niche in the centre of the altar holding an image of Jesus, the Crucified, under a round arch. The image stays between four painted pilasters (two at each side) with rectangular bases, the pilasters have decorated capitals, on the top of these a cornice is the base of a round pediment painted and decorated in Baroque style. The ceiling is a decorated barrel vault.

The main facade faces south framed between two bell towers. Each tower has four large windows with round arches and bells, divided by pilasters made of rectangular blocks of granite.

In the centre of the facade is the portal, the lintel is in granite decorated in Baroque style, a depressed arch, crowned with an angel 's head with open wings, upon a little cornice. At each side of the portal are two granite columns with fluted shafts as long as the lintel, where the columns end with Corinthian capitals. Above the cornice is a door with an iron balustrade. The ensemble is crowned by a kind of coat of arms with Baroque decoration.

Inside the church is housed the museum of religious art Cónego Albano Vaz Pinto.

IGREJA DE NOSSA SENHORA DA PENHA

Esta igreja remonta ao séc. XVI. Fica situada no cimo da serra de São Paulo, a 1 km para Sudoeste de Castelo de Vide.

O seu conjunto é constituído por três volumes: nave, capela-mor e sacristia.

A nave é trapezoidal, o tecto é em abóbada de berços e arranca de uma cornija recta. Na parede Norte há um nicho e uma pia em mármore para água benta. Na parede Oeste abre-se o arco triunfal de volta perfeita com uma porta gradeada em ferro, que comunica com a capela-mor.

Todas as paredes são revestidas a azulejo branco até ao arranque da abóbada, junto ao solo há um rodapé de azulejos azuis e brancos formando xadrez.

A capela-mor de planta circular, o tecto é uma cúpula semiesférica. Na parede Norte abre-se uma fresta para iluminação e na parede oposta, o vão de acesso à sacristia. O altar está colocado na parede Oeste, é de estilo barroco com um nicho ao centro que contem a imagem da Senhora da Penha. Todo o conjunto é revestido a azulejos.

Na fachada principal abrem-se três vãos: a porta principal, uma fresta gradeada à esquerda e sobrepujando a porta rasga-se um óculo em forma de trevo de quatro folhas, encimado por um painel de azulejos que representam a Senhora da Penha. No ângulo superior do frontão ergue-se uma cruz em granito.

Igreja de São João

Built in the 14th century, there is no doubt about it, and $nbsp;is one of the oldest churches of Castelo de Vide.

It is the seat of one parish, once belonged this church to the Order of Malta and it was a commendation (TN: feudal law) of a nunnery in Estremoz. It is probable that this nuns were the founders of the church.

The church of S. João is situated betwen Largo C. Salgueiro Maia and Largo João José Le Cocq.

It is composed by four areas: nave, chapel, sacristy and one bell tower.

Igreja de Santiago Maior

It is possible that this church was built during the 16th century.

The Church of Santiago is in the Carreira de Santiago / ring road and it integrated the Portuguese Way of St. James (Compostela).

The church is composed by two areas: nave /chapel and $nbsp;storeroom /bell tower.

Igreja de São Salvador do Mundo

According to our knolegde, is this the oldest church in Castelo de Vide. It was built at the end of the 13th century.

The church of São Salvador do Mundo is situated nearby the ring road, in northern Castelo de Vide.

The church is composed by four areas: nave, chapel, altar and sacristy.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Alegria

The church of N. S. da Alegria stays in the medieval borough and it was built during the 17th century.

It is composed by two areas: nave and chapel (Baroque style) and a sacristy at the side. In all the areas the floor is made of bricks and the walls of stone and lime, painted in white on the outside, inside the church the walls of the nave and the chapel are covered by polychrome tiles. The church has a roof with typical Portuguese Moorish tiles.

Igreja de Santo Amaro

In the 14th century, a shrine was built on a piece of land $nbsp;in the suburbs, on a hill nearby Fonte da Vila, today Rua de Santo Amaro. Later the shrine became possession of the Misericórdia of Castelo de Vide, and, in 1534, this organisation received from the Municipality a piece of wasteland to build a hospital to the poor and the sick. The year 1777 craved in the portal is the rebuilding date of the church, when is was renewed and enlarged and became united with the hospital of the Misericordia.

The actual church of Santo Amaro is really an unique jewel of Baroque style in Alto Alentejo.

In this temple everything is well balanced and full of magnitude. The decorations are very well integrated. With a fantastic proportion: nave, altar and sacristy. It is one of the most beautiful temples of Castelo de Vide. In the altar there are precious statues of saints.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

We do not really know if this church was built in the 17th century. The year 1680 craved above the portal, may not be the foundation year. Because, in municipal council minutes dated 5 January 1650, is said that the shrine of Senhora dos Remédios is in need of repair. This church was also damaged by the earthquake in 1755.

The church of Senhora dos Remédios is situated by the cemetery of Castelo de Vide at the end of the estrada da Mealhada (road).

It is composed by three areas: nave, chapel and sacristy.

Igreja de São Roque

The church of São Roque, built in the 15th century, was rebuilt or repaired during the 18h century.

The church is situated inside the Fort of São Roque, on a extreme point of Castelo de vide.

It is composed by four areas: galilee, nave, chapel and annex.

Igreja de Santo Amador

The church of Santo Amador is situated in the Limpas de Santo Amador, by the road to Meada, 8 km from Castelo de Vide.

It is possible that this church was built in the 13th century, due to the primitive trace of the portal.

The reason why it was built is unknown. Probably it was already a ruin during the 17th century, destroyed in the wars with Spain, but still possible to use for service.

In 1956, the church was almost on the ground. With money from a public collection and with the commitment of Canon Albano da Costa Vaz Pinto the church was then rebuild. The materials used were partially from the old church. It was used: stone, lime and rough sand and cement on the floor. The altar is placed against the wall, the ceiling is made of wood and the portal of iron.

In 2004 was again renewed.

Igreja do Calvário

It was not possible to find out the foundation year of this church. However we know that it was already erected before 1650 according to an old document, where is said that is was situated outside the town-walls.

The church of Calvário is in Ladeira de S. Roque in Castelo de Vide.

Igreja do Senhor do Bonfim

It is possible that this church was built during the 18th century, because of the date craved above the portal, 1766, seems to be the foundation year.

The church of Senhor do Bonfim is situated 750 m west of Castelo de Vide, in a place called Brejo.

Igreja do Bom Jesus

We do not know why the church of Bom Jesus was erected in this place. It seems that its was $nbsp;built during the 18the century.

This church is situated at the end of Ladeira do Bom Jesus ca. 600 m northeast of the town, by $nbsp;the road to Meada.

Igreja de Santo António

1700 is the foundation year of this church, according to the inscription craved in a marble stone in the facade above the portal.

The church is situated in a narrow path leading to Fonte dos Besteiros, in the neighbourhood with the same name, ca. 200m from the centre of Castelo de Vide.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

This shrine was built by order of a Simão da Cruz, $nbsp;who lived as anchorite in this place, he deceased $nbsp;in January 10th 1669.

It is probable that the church was founded in the 17th century and modified in the 18th century.

The church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is situated in a place with the same name, on the right bank of Ribeira da Vide (river), 1300m northeast of Castelo de Vide, on the top of a little hill.

Igreja de São Francisco

The church of São Francisco was built in the 16th century. This church belongs to the Convent of São Francisco.

The convent and the church of São Francisco are situated by the park João José da Luz, at the beginning of Av. da Europa and the road to Portagem, Marvão and Spain.

Igreja de S. José

This church was built in the beginning of the 17th century, according to the inscription on sepulchral slabs.

The church of S. José is situated in a street with the same name, inside the town, in the southern hill of the Castelo de Vide.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz

This church was built in the 16th century, according to the date on the wall of $nbsp;the nave at the right side of the triumphal arch.

The church of Nossa Senhora da Luz is situated nearby the road EN246-1 at kilometer 0,5 westhern of Castelo de Vide.

Igreja de São Pedro

The church of São Pedro was probably built in the 16th century.

This church is situated ca. 350 m south of Castelo de Vide, by the road EN246-1, in a place called Martinho.

Igreja de S. Vicente Ferrer

Nothing is known about the foundation year of this church. However the construction and its characteristics seems to indicate a building from the end of the 17th $nbsp;of beginning 18th century.

The church of S. Vicente Ferrer is situated in the way out of Castelo de Vide by the road leading to Marvão / Spain.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vitória

This church was built and endowed by Master António Mousinho Galeano and his wife Leonor Delicado in 1639.

The church of Senhora da Vitória is situated northeast of Castelo de Vide at the road to Beirã between the road junctions to Meada and Senhora do Carmo.

Igreja de São Miguel

We do not know exactly when this church was erected. But in a document of the Municipality, dated April 8th 1570, is mentioned that at that same day there was signed an "Agreement for a donation from the house of São Miguel to Nossa Senhora da Penna, and the administration, and his wife Margarida Pires, as long as both shall live, hereafter revert to the municipality of this Town.".

The church of S. Miguel is situated southeast of Castelo de Vide in a remote place.

IGREJA PAROQUIAL DE PÓVOA E MEADAS

Igreja de Santa Margarida - Póvoa e Meadas

The church of Santa Margarida, due to its historical and architectonic style, seems to be built in the 16th century.

This church is situated in the village of Póvoa e Meadas by the road to Meada and it is facing west.

Igreja da Misericórdia - Póvoa e Meadas

This church was built in the end of the 16th or in the beginning of the 17th century.

The church of Misericórdia is situated in the centre of the village of Póvoa e Meadas, Municipality of Castelo de Vide.

Igreja de São Paulo (ruins)

The church of São Paulo was built during the 16th century.$nbsp;

Today is a ruin. The church was situated nearby the shrine of Senhora da Penha and probably is dated from the same period.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Meada (ruins)

Although we do not know much about this church, the construction seems to be from the 16th century.

The church of Nossa Senhora da Meada is situated in a remote place, nearby the old village Meada, 9km north of Castelo de Vide, nearby the geodesic mark of Meada.
