Fonte da Vila

Classified as a national monument since 1953, it is the town's emblematic landmark. It is of particular value not just on its own $nbsp;but also due to its architectural surroundings.$nbsp;

It is situated in Largo Dr. Frederico Laranjo.$nbsp;

This fountain ? built in the 16th century, during the reign of king João III - formed the centre of development of the surrounding streets. It is possible that it was built over different periods, beginning as just a spring, then transformed as a simple fountain for drinking water, then rebuilt in the 16th century as the current monument.

The rectangular basin $nbsp;is composed of vertical granite stones. Six marble columns support a pyramidal roof topped with a pine cone. Within this structure is a disc-shaped body with four symmetric taps. Mounted on this is a stone plate decorated with the coats of arms of Portugal and of Castelo de Vide and figures of two children. This ensemble is also topped by an acanthus flower or $nbsp;tulip. Next to it is another rectangular basin which served as a trough for donkeys, mules and horses.

Fonte do Montorinho

This fountain, situated in Largo Mártires da República, is entirely of marble and stands above four steps around a round basin. In the centre is a column in the shape of a cone on which are mounted three taps in the shape of fishes. On top is a sculpture of little boy piercing a further fish with a trident.

Fixed to the column is a weathered metal with the following inscription:

"This fountain was constructed with a government grant obtained by the member of parliament Dr. José Frederico Laranjo, native of this town." On the opposite side of the column is the inscription ?this monument dates from 1889?.

Fonte da Mealhada

This fountain is situated nearby Parque 25 de Abril, in a superb spot with the background the $nbsp;S. Paulo mountain.$nbsp;

It is composed by five pillars with capitals and granitic ashlars, a cornice finishes the top with two $nbsp;pinnacles decorated with a globe at each side. In the middle a round coat of arms of Castelo de Vide of marble toped by a cross with the engraved date 1699, the foundation year of this fountain.

Through the four marble taps, representing the heads of lions, flows the famous drinking water of Castelo de Vide.

Fonte do Ourives

This fountain stands in the middle of Largo do Capitão Fernando Salgueiro Maia, but it is to small to stand out $nbsp;in the square. It is situated nearby the parish church, the S. João Church and several manor houses.

Its name comes from a jeweler that once existed in this square.

Fonte de Pêro Boi

This fountain was built in the 17th century, but it is known the existence of a spring in this place at the beginning of the 16th century. It is situated beneath Quinta do Martinho by Ribeira de S. João (river).$nbsp;

This is a very simple fountain. A quadrangular basin encrusted in two pillars with moldings and capitals. The top frontal and pyramids are entirelly made of granite.

Between the pillars is a tympanum with cutout moldings. This ensemble is topped by an armillary sphere and the coat of arms of Portugal, in Manuelino architecture style. Nearby, two water basins, one served as trough for animals and the other was used to wash clothes.

Fonte of S. Tiago

It is unknown when this fountain was built, probably at the same time as the Church of S. Tiago in the 16th $nbsp;century.

The fountain of S. Tiago is situated next to the Carreira de S. Tiago (way), in the eastern wall of the church.

Fonte do Martinho

Outside the town by the road leading to Portalegre stays this majestic fountain from late 17th century. It looks as if here existed already another spring before.

The existing fountain is very big. It has a drinking water basin for animals. It is all made of granite. The ensemble is composed by nine pillars. Four taps, encrusted in white marble dolphins, occupy the space between the five central pillars.

All the pillars have capitals, but this fountain has never been finished, because there is missing a $nbsp;tympanum on the top.

Fonte dos Besteiros

This fountain dates probably from the 19th century, it is situated in the south, beneath the town, $nbsp;between the Serra de S. Paulo (mountain) and parallel to the Ribeira de S. João (river).

It is composed by a basin encrusted between two pillars of granite with cyma moldings and $nbsp;capitals. Above this an arched front with a cornice, two pinnacles molded as cubes ornament the top of the pillars.

In the front of the fountain an oval molding is sourrounding a white marble memorial stone with the following text:

"Built by order of Dr. Fr. José Freire de Macedo magistrate in this town in 1504."

Fonte da Sra. da Penha

It is situated in the square next to the stairs to the shrine of Nª Srª da Penha, on the top of Serra de S. Paulo and it was founded in August 5th, 1990.

Projected by António Ventura Profirio, this fountain has the shape of a quadrangular prism, having at each side sitting places and back supports made of rough granite, on the top spheres of granite decorate the ensemble.

Fonte da Sant'Ana

This fountain is also called Fontinha do Castelo (Castle's Little Fountain). It is unknown when it was built. $nbsp;We do known that the fountain have been changed through the centuries, according to information given by Francisco Borba, born in Castelo de Vide.

The Fontinha do Castelo, as it is usual known, is just outside the town-walls nearby the ring road.

Fonte do Penedo Monteiro

Built in 1976, it is situated in the belvedere public park Penedo Monteiro.

According to the author, António Ventura Profírio, it is a modern fountain, inspired in the 18th century style, it has a rustic design to be in harmony with the surounding landscape.

It is built in masonry, it is unknown where the shell that makes part of it comes from. It was $nbsp; bought around 1976 from an antiquarian in the town.

Fonte Nova

This fountain was built in the middle of the 19th century, it is situated ca. 2 km outside the town, in the direction of Portalegre.

Entirely made of granite, it has a gracious arched design. The central peace in granite is flanked by two other forming scrolls with the shape of a "S", above the central peace is a tympanum with cut-out figures in granite.

Behind the fountain there is a public basin.

Fonte do Vale Serrão

Originally this historical fountain was in Vale Serrão, parish of São João Baptista, nowadays it is situated in one of the entrances Castelo de Vide.$nbsp;

It is unknown the date of its construction. The parish of Santa Maria da Devesa bought it from an antiquarian of this town in October of 2000. It was placed in São Vicente Ferrer in 2004, during the enhancement project for the area of Boavista ? Moutosa.

Fonte Pedra do Alentejo

In April 21st, 2001, the Danish sculptor Jorge Haugen Sorensen gave this piece to the town.

It is situated in Parque 25 de Abril and is made of twenty ton granite blocks, also a gift to the Town of Castelo the Vide from Granitos de Maceira from the quarries of Alpalhão.
