Fauna and Flora
The diversity of ecological conditions indicates the presence of a large number of animal communities. Rare birds, as the Bonelli eagle and the vulture, share their territory with hawks, short-toet eagles, gray kestrels, goshawks and harriers. Also to notice is the presence of eagle owls and tawny owls. Along with birds of prey is also very special the presence of the black stork in Castelo de Vide, besides these a large nummer of other birds inhabit our mountains. The registered species represent more than the halve of all breeding birds in Portugal.
Between the mammals is to appoint the boar and the deer, the number of both species is growing, the badger, the fitchew, the Egyptian mongoose, the genet, the wildcat, the famous fox and the commun rabbit are very frequent.
In a region with a clear Mediterranen climate, the presence of oak and chestnut groves gives to this part of Alentejo a northerly image. Both, oaks and chestnut trees, exist next to cork trees, holm oaks, olive trees and a large range of other wild species, some of them quite rare.
